Democratic Conviviality under Threat: Intersectional Conflicts and the Far-Right Upsurge in Latin America and Europe

The rise of new right-wing and far-right actors in various Latin American and European countries has significantly altered material realities and public discourse. Disputes over political positions have become increasingly harsh and seemingly irreconcilable, often escalating to direct threats against democratic order. Entangled with conflicts over economic (re)distribution, disputes over moral and cultural issues have intensified, particularly around topics such as gender or religion. Furthermore, the nature of right-wing parties, movements, digital influencers and their transnational alliances has evolved rapidly, deploying sophisticated strategies of circulation and interpellation.

This workshop brings together researchers who have been studying these phenomena in both Europe and Latin America. The goal is to discuss socio-political constellations observed in the different countries and to identify the main commonalities and differences in these intersectional conflicts. By examining these dynamics from a global perspective, we expect to gain a deeper understanding of contemporary challenges for democratic coexistence in these interconnected regions. The dialogue aims to refine our analytical and methodological toolkits in order to assess the multiple dimensions of the contemporary right-wing upsurge.
