Scientific manager
Our Scientific Manager holds a PhD in German Medieval Literature from the Universität Bern, and a master’s degree in Communication and Media Sciences from the same institution. He previously worked as a researcher and scientific project coordinator at the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (2011-2014) and was a visiting researcher at the Universität Osnabrück (2015) and at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (2016). Before joining Mecila in 2020, he taught German.

Joaquim Toledo Jr., PhD
Scientific editor
Our Scientific Editor, responsible for the Working Papers Series and other publications, holds a PhD in Philosophy from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). He was chief editor of Novos Estudos Cebrap (2010-15), visiting researcher at the University of Chicago (2008), associate researcher at the Philosophy Department of Unicamp (2018), and postdoctoral researcher at the Philosophy Department of the Universidade de São Paulo (2019-20). He joined Mecila’s coordination office team in 2020.

Melanie Metzen
Our Events and Outreach Coordinator has a degree in Social Communication (2013) from the Universidade de São Paulo, and a postgraduate (lato sensu) degree in Business Administration (2018) from the Fundação Getúlio Vargas. She worked in the publishing market before turning to corporate communications in 2017 when she joined the communications team of the Câmara de Comércio e Indústria Brasil-Alemanha. She joined Mecila’s team in São Paulo in 2018.

Raphael Concli
Coordination assistant
Raphael Concli obtained his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Philosophy at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, with a research internship at Buffalo State College, USA. He is currently studying journalism at the Universidade de São Paulo. He worked as a High School teacher of Philosophy and Sociology and has also been part of Jornal da USP and Article 19. He joined Mecila’s coordination office team in 2019.

Milagros Pacco
Project coordinator and data manager
Milagros Pacco studied History and Digital Humanities and obtained her master’s degree (2015) at the Universität zu Köln (UzK). During her studies, she worked as a student assistant in the department for Iberian and Latin American History at the Institute of History of UzK, in the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies, and in the Global South Studies Center (GSSC) at UzK.
She has been a research assistant at the department for Iberian and Latin American History at the Institute of History of UzK since July 2017. As a research assistant, she is involved with academic and coordination tasks and developing and establishing the Research Data Management infrastructure at the Maria Sibylla Merian Centre (Mecila) at UzK.

Jessica Wiegel
Jessica Wiegel trained as a bilingual Commercial Assistant at the Institute of Economics and Administration – Berufskolleg für Wirtschaft und Verwaltung, Siegen, Germany (2006) with a focus on administration and economy. She worked at the administration of the University of Siegen in 2016. Since 2017 she has been working at the University of Cologne administration as an administrative assistant in different projects. She joined the Mecila team at Cologne in July 2020.
