Carlos Alba-Vega is Professor and Researcher from El Colegio de México (COLMEX) and holds a PhD in Social Sciences from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris (EHESS). He has been a Member of the Board of COLMEX and has taught and been a Visiting Fellow in universities in Mexico, France, Germany, and the United States. In his research, he has addressed informal economies, processes of globalization and a broad range of political and economic development issues in different regions of Mexico. Carlos Alba has been a council member of (a number of journals, including) the Revista Mexicana de Sociología (Mexico), Tempo de Ciência (Brazil), Perfiles Latinoamericanos (Flacso-Mexico), Espiral (Mexico), Argumentos (Mexico), Sociétés Contemporaines (France), and Frontera Norte (Mexico). He was also responsible for the Mexican branch of the project ‘Between Spaces’, which created an interdisciplinary group of doctoral investigators in collaboration with Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin).

Samuel Barbosa is Professor at the Law School of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), a permanent researcher of the Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento (CEBRAP), and former President of the Brazilian Institute of History of Law (2016-2019). He is one of the coordinators of the Legal History Network, based at the Instituto de Estudos Brasileiro (IEB-USP). He holds a PhD in Theory of Law from USP and a Master’s degree in Studies in Religion and the Old Testament from the Universidade Metodista de São Paulo. He completed his postdoctoral studies at the Max-Planck-Institut für Rechtsgeschichte und Rechtstheorie (Max-Planck Institute for European Legal History) in Frankfurt, Germany, where he was visiting-researcher on several occasions. His research focuses on the multi-sited formation of normative orders and their conflicts.

Peter Birle is a researcher and Director of the Research and Publications Department of the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut, Berlin (IAI) and an Associate Professor at Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin), working mainly with the subject of political systems in Latin America. He holds a PhD in Political Sciences from the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (JGU). Prof. Birle is a member of the Executive Board of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutsche Lateinamerikaforschung (ADLAF), and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Politikwissenschaft (DGfP). He was an Assistant Professor at the Universität Rostock and also at JGU. Prof. Birle was also Visiting Professor and Researcher at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Bogotá, Colombia) several times.

Professor Gloria Chicote, based in Argentina, is a literary scholar and the current Director of the Instituto de Investigaciones en Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales (IdIHCS), a joint research institution of the Argentinian Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) and the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP). She is also a member of the scientific committee Centro de Estudios de Teoría y Crítica Literaria of the Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación of UNLP. Professor Chicote holds a PhD from the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras of the Universidad de Buenos Aires. Her recent work focuses on popular Hispanic literature from Spain to Latin America and takes a comprehensive perspective of literary parameters for the understanding of cultural processes.

Trained in economics and sociology in Brazil and Germany, Sérgio Costa is Professor of Sociology at Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin). Along with Marcos Nobre, he is the current Director of Mecila. He is also Editor of the series Global Entangled Inequalities: Exploring Global Asymmetries, at Routledge. He holds a PhD from the Department of Sociology of FU Berlin, from which he also earned his habilitation (2005), later published as ‘From North Atlantic to Black Atlantic: Social Theory, Antiracism, Cosmopolitanism’ (2007, in German). His areas of interest are social theory, postcolonial sociologies, inequality research, conviviality and difference. His publications include four monographs, approximately 100 articles and book chapters as well as 13 edited volumes.

Laura Flamand currently works at the Centro de Estudios Internacionales of El Colegio de México (COLMEX). She earned her PhD in Political Science at the University of Rochester, New York (2004), after undertaking a pre-doctoral fellowship at the Department of Political Studies at the University of Oxford. She became Research Professor at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (Mexico) in 2004, and has been a member of the Mexican National System of Scholars since 2006. Her research focuses on a comparative analysis of political institutions, intergovernmental public policy, social inequalities and applied statistics. Laura Flamand has ample experience in academic leadership as she has coordinated more than fourteen research projects with external funding from the World Bank, the United Nations Development Program and several government agencies in Mexico.

Barbara Göbel has been the Director of the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut, Berlin (IAI) since 2005. In 2017 she was nominated Honorary Professor at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology of Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin). In addition to her role in Mecila, she is Principal Investigator of the EU Project (Horizon 2020) funded project (2016-2019): ‘Giving focus to the cultural, scientific and social dimension of EU-CELAC relations – EULAC Focus’ and Co-Chair of the DFG funded project ‘The commodity boom in Peru (1993-2014: old and new inequalities)’ (2018-2019). Barbara Göbel has been involved in several international, interdisciplinary projects and she is a member of multiple boards and review panels of national and international organizations and funding agencies. Professor Göbel studied social anthropology, prehistory, and economic and social history at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and holds a PhD from the Universität Göttingen. She worked at the Universities of Göttingen, Tübingen, Stuttgart-Hohenheim, Köln and Bonn (Germany) and at the Laboratoire d’Anthropologie Sociale, Collège de France and has served as Visiting Professor at several universities in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru.

Manuel Santos Silva is Assistant Professor (Junior Professor) of Latin American Economics at the Institute of Latin American Studies and the Department of Economics at the FU Berlin. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Münster and the University of Göttingen. He holds a PhD in Economics (in the Research Training Group ‘Globalisation and Development’ (GlaD)) from the University of Göttingen, where he also completed a master’s degree in Development Economics. As his main research focus, he studies from an empirical perspective how gender inequalities shape and interact with labour markets, public policies and political processes.

Mário Augusto Medeiros da Silva is a professor at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). With extensive experience in the field, his research focuses on themes such as Brazilian Social Thought, Literature and Society, Intellectuals and Society, Social Memory and Black Modernity. He was awarded the Prize for Young Social Scientists in the Portuguese Language by the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra in 2013. He was a finalist for the Jabuti Prize in 2014 and 2020 and during 2023 he was a Senior Fellow at Mecila. In addition to his academic activities, Mário Medeiros da Silva was also Deputy Director of the Edgar Leuenroth Archive (2020-2022) and since 2023 has been the Director of the same archive.

Marta Machado is Full Professor of Law at the Escola de Direito de São Paulo of the Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) where she coordinates the Centre of Studies on Crime and Punishment. Furthermore, she is a permanent researcher of the Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento (CEBRAP) and a Global Fellow at the Centre on Law & Social Transformation (CMI/ Univ. of Bergen). She earned her Master’s degree and PhD at the Faculdade de Direito of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Recently, she has been Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto and Columbia Law School. Her research areas include criminal law, general theory of law and sociology of law. Her most recent research is located in the interdisciplinary field of law, political science and sociology of law and focuses on the relations between social movements and law. She has developed studies applied to the fields of racism, gender, human rights and the right to protest.

Rúrion Melo holds a PhD in philosophy from USP and is a professor of political theory at the department of political science at USP and a researcher at CEBRAP. Professor Gesine Müller teaches Romance Studies at Universität zu Köln (UzK) and is the head of the ERC research group ‘Reading Global: Constructions of World Literature and Latin America’. From 2008 to 2015 she was also the head of the DFG Emmy Noether Junior Research Group ‘Transcolonial Caribbean’. She holds a PhD from the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, Münster, as well as a postdoctoral degree from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), in Paris. Her numerous publications cover various aspects of French and Spanish-language literature in Europe and overseas.

Professor Moacyr Novaes is an Associate Professor at USP’s Philosophy Department. He holds a master’s degree and a doctoral degree in philosophy from USP. He has been a member of the Center for the Study of Patristic and Medieval Philosophy of São Paulo since 1992. At USP, he was president of the Faculty of Philosophy, Literature and Human Sciences’ Research Commission, director of the Centro Universitário Maria Antônia, director of the Agency for National and International Academic Cooperation, and assistant pro-rector for university outreach.

Barbara Potthast is Professor at Universität zu Köln (UzK) and Director of the Institute for Iberian and Latin-American History as well as the President of the Centro Latinoamericano de Colonia (CLAC) and the Global South Studies Center Cologne (GSSC). Between 1996 and 2016 she was a member of the Directorate (and President 2004 – 2006) of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutsche Lateinamerikaforschung (ADLAF). Peter W. Schulze is an Associate Professor of Latin American Studies and Director of the Portuguese-Brazilian Institute at the Universität zu Köln (UzK). His main research interests are decolonial theories and cultural practices. Peter W. Schulze is the editor of the book series Estudos Luso-Brasileiros (Peter Lang Press) and Cadernos do Instituto Luso-Brasileiro (PBI/University of Cologne). Stephanie Schütze is Associate Professor for Cultural and Social Anthropology at the Lateinamerika-Institut (LAI) of the FU Berlin, where she is also the Deputy Director. She has been a Visiting Professor of Gender Politics at Universität Kassel, and for Gender Studies at the Núcleo de Estudos de Gênero Pagu (Pagu Gender Studies Nucleus) of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), Brazil. At FU Berlin, she was also the Vice-Chair of the Commission for the Promotion of Young Female Scholars. Prof. Schütze obtained her habilitation at FU Berlin, having published in the area of ethnology. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the same institution.

Bianca Tavolari is a professor of law at Insper, a researcher at CEBRAP, and a visiting professor at the University of St.Gallen. She holds a doctoral and a master’s degree from the USP Faculty of Law, specialising in critical legal theory and democracy in the Weimar Republic, as well as the theoretical intersections between law and urban studies. She obtained her bachelor’s degrees in law and philosophy, both from the USP.

She is the coordinator of the project cluster on urban issues Núcleo de Questões Urbanas and co-coordinator of the São Paulo Master Plan Review Observatory at Insper, as well as a former researcher of the project laboratory LabCidade of the FAUUSP.

Her academic publications and public interventions reflect her interest in urban conflicts and the intersections between law, democracy, and critical theory. As a collaborating editor at Quatro Cinco Um, she reviews books on cities from a multidisciplinary perspective. She has translated several books and articles, including The Divided West (O ocidente dividido) by Jürgen Habermas (Editora Unesp, 2019).

Angela Alonso holds a PhD in Sociology from the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and a postdoctoral degree from Yale University. She is Professor of the Sociology Department of the USP and was President of the Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento (CEBRAP) from 2015 to 2018. She was a Principal Investigator at Mecila from 2017 to March 2019.
Prof. Alonso’s research comprises social and intellectual movements and conflicts, both in Brazilian history and the present. She is the author of ‘Ideas in Movement: The 1870s generation in the Brazilian Empire crisis’ (best doctoral thesis. Prize CNPq/Anpocs, 2001), “Joaquim Nabuco: os salões e as ruas” (2007), both also published in France, and, “Flowers, Ballots and Bullets: The abolitionist movement in Brazil (1868-1888)”, which was awarded the Jabuti Prize for best book in human sciences and best book of the year by the Academia Brasileira de Letras in 2015; it is forthcoming in English and will be published by Cambridge University Press. In 2009, she was honoured with the John S. Guggenheim Foundation Award.

Marianne Braig holds a PhD in Sociology from Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin) and a degree (double major) in Economics and Sociology from the same institution. She is currently retired from the Lateinamerika-Institut (LAI) at FU Berlin and serves as Academic Director of ‘trAndeS – Postgraduate Program on Sustainable Development and Social Inequalities in the Andean Region’. She works on intertwined and interdependent inequalities and transnational violence in the global context, transformation and development in Latin America, as well as the political culture of the state and governance.

Stefanie Gänger was a Junior Professor of Latin American History at the Universität zu Köln (UzK). She holds a PhD in History from the University of Cambridge. She has held short-term fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and at the University of Pennsylvania. Stefanie’s work considers the histories of science and medicine in late-colonial and early Republican Spanish America, especially the history of antiquarianism and collecting, and more recently, vernacular medicine, epistemic brokerage, and plant trade.

Debora Gerstenberger holds a PhD in Global Studies from Universität Leipzig and is currently Junior Professor (Juniorprofessorin) of Latin American History with special consideration of globalization processes and gender at the Lateinamerika-Institut of Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin). In 2012, she received the award for the best PhD dissertation in the field of Latin American Studies from the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutsche Lateinamerikaforschung (ADLAF). In her research, she focuses on the Portuguese Empire (Early Modern History), Brazil and the Southern Cone. Currently, she is working on a project about the computerization of state security systems (armed forces, police, intelligence) in Latin America from the 1960s through the 1980s.

Fernando Rugitsky is Professor of the Economy Department at the Faculdade de Economia, Administração, Contabilidade e Atuária of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and an associate researcher of the Democracy & Law Nucleus at Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento (CEBRAP). Prof. Rugitsky holds a postdoctoral degree from USP as well as a PhD in Economy from The New School for Social Research (New York, USA). He earned his Master’s degree in Economic Law from USP and a Bachelor’s degree of Economics and Law from the same institution. Fernando Rugitsky was a Teaching Assistant at the Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) and the New School for Social Research, where he was also a Teaching Fellow.
