[2020] Amazonian Object Lessons to Adjourn the End of the Ethnographic Museums

The event is organized by the IAI, in cooperation with Mecila, the Forschungscampus Dahlem der SPK, the Ethnologisches Museum (SMB) and the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung.

The ongoing debates on the colonial backgrounds of ethnographic and art collections in European museums is gaining momentum in the public arena given the growing demands for the return of objects and the inclusion of indigenous curators in contemporary heritage institutions. Dr Thiago da Costa Olivera will discuss in his conference the specific contribution of Amerindian people to the decolonization of European museums and collections. Hereby, he will start from two central topics of the critique: the legal conditions of appropriating and the moral require­ments for representing other cultures.

Thiago da Costa Oliveira is a post-doctoral Fellow from the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung at the Ethnologisches Museum (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, SPK). Since 2011 he has been col­labo­ratively re­searching, assembling collections, planning exhibitions, and making documentary films and photographs along with Amazonian indigenous people.
