President of Freie Universität Berlin visits São Paulo

During his recent visit to the city of São Paulo (31.07), the newly-elected President of Freie Universität Berlin, Professor Günter M. Ziegler, had the opportunity to visit Mecila’s working spaces at the University of São Paulo (USP) as well as to meet with representatives of the International Cooperation Office (Aucani) of USP.

Professor Ziegler met with Aucani Provost Raul Machado Neto, as well as the Head of the Liaison Office of the Freie Universität Berlin in São Paulo, Nora Jacobs; the Mecila Scientific Coordinator, Dr. Nicolas Wasser; and Angela Alonso, president of Cebrap, Mecila Principal Investigator, and professor at USP.

The University of São Paulo and the Freie Universität Berlin are consortium members of the Maria Sibylla Merian Centre Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America (Mecila). The project’s consortium consists of five other institutions: the University of Cologne (UzK, Germany), the Ibero-American Institute (IAI, Germany), the Institute of Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences (IdIHCS, Argentina), the College of Mexico (Colmex, Mexico), and the Brazilian Centre of Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP, Brazil).

According to Professor Ziegler, together these institutions represent “the guiding principles of international cooperation put into practice: an extraordinary combination of institutions in four different countries that complement each other’s strengths.”

Following a visit to the Mecila working spaces at USP, Professor Ziegler went on to a reception at the Goethe-Institut in São Paulo, where the 70th anniversary of Freie Universität Berlin was celebrated with alumni and friends of the institution. Axel Zeidler, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in São Paulo and Dr. Nina Reusch, historian of the Friedrich-Meinecke-Institut, were also present at the event honoring the internationally recognized university.
