International Workshop “Convivial [Hi]Stories: Envisioning ‘Conviviality’ in Colonial and Modern Latin America”

On June 14-15th 2018, the University of Cologne hosted Mecila’s International Workshop “Convivial [Hi]Stories: Envisioning ‘Conviviality’ in Colonial and Modern Latin America”.

During the two-day event, discourses and practices of conviviality – coexistence and cohabitation with difference(s) – in the unequal societies of early and late modern South and Middle America and the Caribbean were discussed by scholars from various Latin American, German and international institutions.

The first panel of this multidisciplinary workshop (“In Theory: Ideals of Conviviality”) examined visionary, utopian discourses of peaceable ‘conviviality’ in the realms of scholarship, society or religion; the second panel (“In Reality: Structures and Conviviality”) devoted itself to the historical and material realities – from tax regimes to infrastructure – of containing, enabling, or policing coexistence and cohabitation with difference; finally, the last panel (“Contested Ground: Conviviality in Crisis”) brought together papers that study contested, or failed projects of conviviality – moments of contestation, rupture, and conflict.
